What is CCL?

The CCL (credentialed community language) test, also known as the CCL test, is a community-level assessment of language abilities. What is NAATI?

The national standard and certification authority for translators and interpreters in Australia is NAATI (national accreditation authority for translators and interpreters), a non-profit company owned by the commonwealth, state, and territory governments.

How is the exam conducted?

Two dialogue tasks are delivered through recorded materials in the CCL test. Recordings of alternative conversation segments between an English speaker and a language other than an English (lote) speaker will be listened to. The CCL test evaluates a candidate’s ability to comprehend source utterances (in English or the lote) and reproduce them in the target language with a reasonable level of accuracy and accordance with both languages’ linguistic norms and conventions. The test dialogues will require meaning transfer skills in both language directions, with each conference having a different topic. The time it takes to complete the test can vary from 20 to 30 minutes.

What is the CCL test structure?

The test lasts around 30 minutes and comprises two 3-minute conversations. Each dialogue has a natural English speaker conversing with a native LOTE speaker. The candidate’s response will be recorded and used in the marking process. Each dialogue is around 300 words long, with roughly half of them written in English and the other half in LOTE. The conference is divided into parts, each limited to 30 terms (from 35 in the previous). Until December 2020, NAATI has announced that all NAATI CCL tests would be conducted online, allowing persons residing in Hong Kong, Singapore, Indonesia, Dubai, UAE, Canada, the United Kingdom, India, and Pakistan to take the exam.

CREDENTIALED COMMUNITY LANGUAGE (CCL) TEST WILL BE INDEPENDENTLY MARKED BY A MINIMUM OF TWO EXAMINERS. EACH DIALOGUE IS MARKED OUT OF A TOTAL OF 45 POINTS. IN ORDER TO PASS YOU NEED TO SCORE AT LEAST 29 POINTS FOR EACH DIALOGUE, AND AT LEAST 63 OUT OF 90 OVERALL..

How Is The CCL Test Taken?

Criteria To Pass

CCL Test Comprises Of Two Dialogues; Each Worth 45 Marks. In Order To Pass The Test, A Candidate Requires At Least 29 Marks In Each Dialogue And An Overall Score Of 63 Out Of 90.

The Result For The CCL Test Will Be Given As:

PASS: 63 Or Higher (Marks Out Of 90)
MARGINAL FAIL: Between 55 And 62.5
(Marks Out Of 90)
CLEAR FAIL: Less Than 55 (Marks Out Of 90)

In Situations Where A Candidate Achieves 23 Out Of 45 In Dialogue 1, 41 Out Of 45 In Dialogue 2 And An Overall Score Of 64 Out Of 90, The Result Given Will Be CLEAR FAIL As The Candidate Hasn’t Achieved Required Score In Dialogue 1 (I.E.
29).

CCL TEST ASSESSMENT

CCL TEST IS ASSESSED INDIVIDUALLY BY AT LEAST TWO EXAMINERS USING A DEDUCTIVE MARKING SYSTEM. HERE, THE TYPE OF ERRORS IN A CANDIDATE’S PERFORMANCE ARE TAKEN INTO ACCOUNT BY THE EXAMINERS.
